The cabinet makes most of the council’s member level decisions, in line with the overall policies and budget of the council. This includes strategic matters, such as leading on the regeneration of Medway and also operational matters, such as determining parking issues in local areas.

The cabinet consists of 10 elected members from the Conservative Group, as this group has overall control of the council following the local elections on 3 May 2007. The cabinet was announced at Annual Council on 23 May 2007. These members are known as portfolio holders and are responsible for different areas of the council.

The cabinet has a work programme known as the forward plan. The forward plan helps the cabinet plan its work and sets out the decisions the cabinet will make over the next four months. It also gives residents of Medway the opportunity to comment on the issues that the cabinet is tackling.

The cabinet makes its decisions in meetings which are open to members of the public . A small number of issues which are confidential by law may be discussed at these meetings, at which point the press and public are asked to leave.

Information on other aspects of the cabinet’s work, including past agendas, reports and decisions, is also available.
