Apply for a disabled parking permit (Blue Badge)

Apply or renew a Blue Badge on gov.uk

A Blue Badge gives additional parking rights to people with severe disabilities, terminal illnesses and mobility problems. It lasts for a maximum of 3 years and costs £10 (this fee also applies when replacing or renewing a badge).

A badge holder can park for free in allocated disabled bays and on the street, in any Medway car park for the maximum stay and on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours.  Always check the payment boards before parking

Applying for a Blue Badge

You can apply for a Blue Badge online. It usually takes between 6 to 8 weeks to process your application and make a decision.

When you apply online, you can check the full list of eligibility criteria before you start your application.  

After you have applied you will have to send us your supporting evidence. You will be told during the application what documents you need to send. You can email these to blue.badges@medway.gov.uk or send to Blue Badge Team, Medway Council, Gun Wharf, Dock Road, Chatham, ME4 4TR.

Alternatively, contact us on 01634 333 333 to request a paper form or collect one from any of the Community Hubs.

Renewing your current Blue Badge

Renewing an existing Blue Badge will follow the same process as applying for the first time.

If your application is unsuccessful

If your application is unsuccessful you can ask for us to review your application or you can apply again in six months if your condition gets worse. 

To request a review, please email us on blue.badges@medway.gov.uk and explain why you disagree with our decision and why you think you should be eligible.

Replace, return or update details of your Blue Badge

Report or replace a lost or stolen Blue Badge

You should report stolen badges to Kent Police. After you have reporting a stolen badge to the police, or if you have lost it report a lost or stolen Blue Badge on gov.uk

You can also contact us on 01634 333 333 to report lost or stolen badge.

You will have to pay a fee of £10 if you want to replace your lost or stolen badge.

Change the details on your Blue Badge

If your name, address or contact details have changed, you won’t need to apply for a replacement but you must report changes to your Blue Badge details online, or by calling us on 01634 333 333.

Returning a Blue Badge

If your circumstances change and you no longer need a Blue Badge you must return the badge to us.

You must return a Blue Badge that has expired, was replaced, when you no longer need it, when the badge holder has deceased, or the organisation stopped transporting disabled people.

You can return your badge by posting it to the Blue Badge Team, Level 2, Medway Council, Gun Wharf, Dock Road, Chatham, ME4 4TR, or you can hand it in at one of our Community Hubs.

Report misuse

If you think someone is using a Blue Badge that they’re not entitled to, or parking in a disabled bay when they shouldn’t, you can report Blue Badge misuse in detail by emailing us on blue.badges@medway.gov.uk or by calling us on 01634 333 333.

Changes to the process of applying for a Blue Badge

You can apply for a Blue Badge using an improved online form from March 2018.

The online application will allow you to apply, submit proof of your identity, address and eligibility, and pay all in one go.

The benefits of the faster online process is that:

  • we will only ask questions relevant to your disability
  • you won't have to post your documents to us
  • you'll get an instant update that we've received your application (if you provided an email address)
  • you will be able to see the progress of your application
  • you'll get your badge quicker
