The Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education is usually known as SACRE.
Medway Council has a statutory duty to establish a SACRE to oversee and support religious education and collective worship in its schools. Religious education (RE) must be taught in schools by law but it is not part of the National Curriculum. There is local responsibility for determining the syllabus for RE. Medway SACRE undertakes this responsibility on behalf of Medway Council for its community schools. It also offers guidance to these schools and the council on all matters relating to RE and collective worship.
Its membership is drawn from Medway councillors and elected representatives from local faith communities and the educational community in Medway.
Meetings are held three times a year and are open to observers. There is also a smaller SACRE working group that meets with the same frequency to support Medway Council’s RE consultant in writing guidance material for schools.
