Medway Dragons: in a league of their own

Medway Dragons have become the first rugby league club in the south-east to be awarded gold Clubmark status.

The club, which was founded just two years ago and runs seven youth teams, was presented with its certificate and plaque during half time at the recent Super League match between Harlequins and St Helen’s.

Clubmark is Sport England’s accreditation for excellence in sports provision for young people. Successful clubs must demonstrate good management, a commitment to equality, diversity and safeguarding children, and must also deliver an excellent playing programme.

Dan Steel, the Rugby Football League’s regional development manager, joined Harlequins and England player Rob Purdham to present club representatives Pal Bains, Steve Lewis and Charlotte Butler with their certificate and plaque.

He said: “Since their formation as a club in 2007, Medway Dragons have worked really hard to provide the best possible environment for all the young people who want to play rugby league in Medway.

“The club has become a model of good practice and has had a positive impact on all other clubs in the South, who have seen the results achieved at Medway and now aspire to achieve the same high standards.”

The Dragons are the 18th Medway sports club to achieve Clubmark status. Chief coach Martin Coyd said: “It’s a truly remarkable and outstanding achievement to have earned the Clubmark in such a short time. Well done to everyone at the club.”

Medway Council’s sports development team offers support and guidance to help clubs achieve Clubmark status.

Sports development officer Sarah Dand said: “Clubmark is an excellent way for clubs to demonstrate quality, but also means parents can feel confident that their children are safe playing sport.

“We are delighted that Medway Dragons have joined the list of Clubmark clubs in Medway and congratulate everyone involved on their success.”
