Religious education (SACRE)

Medway Council has a statutory duty to establish SACRE (Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education) to oversee religious education in schools.

Religious education (RE) must be taught in schools by law but it is not part of the National Curriculum. Instead, Medway SACRE is locally responsible for deciding the RE syllabus that is taught in schools . It also offers guidance to schools and the council on all matters relating to religion and collective worship.

SACRE is made up of Medway councillors and elected representatives from local faith groups. Meetings are held 3 times a year and are open to observers.

SACRE resources

Teachers can borrow resources based on a number of religions for use in their classrooms.

Broken into ‘topic boxes’ they are a great way to make learning fun and allow children to see, touch and talk about religious artefacts they will be taught about in RE.

If you would like to borrow any of the resources below, email the SACRE Chairman on trevoraclarke@blueyonder.co.uk. Schools may borrow up to three boxes per term for free, but any loss or damage to the resources must be paid for.
