Rochester Castle is a hugely impressive and evocative site and makes an ideal class visit for any schools studying medieval history:
- It includes a large open space that allows a good view of its features and makes it easy to manage groups safely.
- It was involved in events of national importance.
- It has been preserved rather than reconstructed and clues to its original form abound.
- Much of its medieval context can still be imagined from the shape of Rochester today.
- Entry is free to all schools that book in advance on receipt of a completed booking form.
Planning a visit
Preparation, including a visit beforehand, will really help the visit run smoothly. There are a few things to bear in mind:
- The keep can only take 30 pupils at a time and groups enter every half hour.
- There is plenty for other groups to see and do in the castle gardens (or bailey) while they are waiting to enter the keep.
- In the keep there is a ratio of one adult to every six children for Years 1 to 3 and one to 10 for all other pupils.
- The castle can be busy and you may need to book well in advance. To book your visit please telephone the castle to check the date and time is available. To confirm your visit please read and complete this booking form (Word 699KB) and return it to the castle.
