Where is the new bus station?
The new bus station is located in Globe Lane and Waterfront Way.
The removal of the Sir John Hawkins Way flyover reconnected
the High Street with the waterfront area. There are 13 bus
stands in Globe Lane, and six in Waterfront Way. These
collectively form the new bus station.
How do I use the new bus station?
The new bus station has four Platforms – A, B, C and
D. To find your platform take a look at the illustrations
of the station layout which are displayed around the bus station.
These show what destinations depart from which platform. Then go to
your platform, where information boards will display
which stand your service will depart from.
Where will service xxx be departing from in the new bus
station?
The table below shows which services run from what platform.
This information will be available on the platforms. Our
destination guide will also help.

Will there be staff on site just in case I can’t find my bus
stop?
Yes. Staff will be available at the Travel Information Centre
(located on platform A) from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday
and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.
Can I find information on the internet about the new bus
station?
Yes. Visit our general information page on Chatham Waterfront bus station. In
addition, you can plan your journey online by visiting the
Traveline website
Who can tell me where to catch my bus or help me plan a
journey?
Please visit the Travel Information Centre (TIC) which is
located on Platform A. The TIC is open 8am to 6pm
Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. Please note
this will be closed on Bank Holidays over the Christmas and New
year period, and operate to Saturday opening times in between
Christmas and New Year.
Alternatively, you can call Traveline on 0871 200 22
33 for public transport information. The phone service is
available: 7am to 10.30pm every day. Phone calls to Traveline cost
10pence per minute plus any charges your network provider
makes.
Information can also be obtained from www.transportdirect.info or
Traveline Southeast
Will bus timetables change?
Bus timetables can change throughout the year. Some
timetables, for example, were updated on 15 January
2012.
Bus operators are generally responsible for timetable changes.
There will be information at the bus station on all departure times
for all bus services that use it.
How can I provide feedback about the new bus
station?
If you want to comment about the running of a
specific bus service call the bus operating company in the
first instance. In the majority of cases in Medway, this will be
Arriva Customer services on 0844 800 44 11.
Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 (calls cost 10pence
per minute from landlines) has details of all other operators. If
this does not resolve the issue call the council's customer service
team, Customer First, on 01634 333333.
If you would like to provide feedback on the Chatham Waterfront
Bus station, please download the feedback form (1,328 KB pdf)
Alternatively email customer.first@medway.gov.uk. Feedback
forms will also be available in the Travel Information
Centre.
Will my bus route be affected?
If your bus normally arrived or departed from the Pentagon then
yes, your bus route will be affected. It will now arrive and depart
from the new bus station located on Chatham Waterfront (opposite
the Pentagon).
An illustration of the station layout and a table of what
destinations depart from which platform is displayed around the bus
station. This information can also be downloaded from our Chatham Waterfront general information
page.
Are the bus stops in Waterfront Way part of the new bus
station?
Yes. The six Waterfront Way bus stops are part of the new bus
station. If your bus service previously departed from stands on
Waterfront Way, it may now be departing from a different stand at
the new bus station. An illustration of the station layout
and a table of where to catch your bus is displayed around the bus
station. This information can also be downloaded from the general information page on Chatham
Waterfront bus station.
What vehicles are permitted to be driven through the bus
station?
Only buses, taxis, emergency vehicles and bus station
service vehicles are allowed in the bus station. Enforcement
is being carried out so any unauthorised vehicle will face
action.
Are taxis allowed to pick up or drop off in the bus
station?
No. Taxis should use the taxi rank at the junction of the Brook
with Military Road.
Are cyclists allowed to cycle through the bus station?
Cyclists should use the signed routes through the bus station
linking Dock Road to Medway Street. This is the new route for
National Cycle Route 1.
Are there public toilets available at the bus
station?
Public toilets are available in the bus station in the
Travel Information Centre. Please note they may be closed at
certain times of the day when cleaning and servicing occur.
However, there are also public toilets located inside the
Pentagon
shopping centre.
Why is the old bus station (Pentagon) closing?
The old bus station is not a welcoming environment for
travellers. It is poorly lit, users suffer from exhaust fumes from
buses and the area is generally run down. The closure of the
Pentagon bus station will allow future development of the
shopping centre.
The new bus station is a key element of the Medway’s ambitious
regeneration programme.
It is:-
- More welcoming - higher quality environment
- New facility – a demonstration of confidence
in Chatham
- Encourages investment in Chatham – better shopping
facilities
- Helps makes Chatham more desirable for national stores and
other businesses to open up here
- Allows the expansion of the Pentagon
- Opens up the waterfront, connects it to Chatham town centre and
links to development sites on the river frontage
This is likely to encourage more people to use bus services,
which helps to tackle growing congestion problem.
What will happen to the old bus station?
In the short term it is proposed for the old bus station to be
used for car parking. In the longer term it is likely
to be incorporated into any future developments of the
Pentagon shopping centre. A planning application has now
been submitted.
I have difficulty in crossing the road. What about the
crossing points?
At 5 crossing points, zebra crossing markings have
been added to aid users. There is also a code of conduct with
all bus companies which states that the maximum speed for buses is
10mph, and that bus drivers should be aware that the bus station is
a public site, and care should be taken and look out for
pedestrians.
Can I smoke there?
Chatham Waterfront is a smoke free
environment, and the public should refrain from smoking for the
courtesy of other users.
