What we do
Medway Council, as the highway authority in Medway, is
responsible for maintaining some 513 miles (825km) of highway
through the Highway Responsive Maintenance Section. It is
responsible for:
Litter, potholes, broken street lights...If you see it,
report it
on Love Medway.
If you would like information regarding road safety education
and campaigns in Medway please visit the Safer Journeys page or facebook page: www.facebook.com/saferjourneysinmedway
We also maintain nearly 186 miles (300km) of Public Rights of Way
(footpaths). The council is not responsible for unadopted roads and paths
or private roads and paths. The council maintains records of
highways that are its responsibility.
The motorway (M2) is the responsibility of the Highways
Agency.
The Highways
Act 1980 places a duty on the highway authority to keep its
highways reasonably free of obstruction and in a condition that
allows the safe passage of people and goods. Its staff carry out
regular inspections of the network to monitor its condition, order
minor repairs and arrange for more major repairs to be carried
out.
The New Roads
and Street Works Act 1991 places a duty on the highway
authority to maintain a street works register, to ensure work
undertaken by service companies is done properly and to co-ordinate
roadworks to minimise
disruption. If you spot a problem with roadworks report it using
this
online form. This form can also be used to report overhanging
scaffolding and overfilled skips.
The extent of the network ensures that it is not possible for
all roads and paths to be in perfect condition all of the time. As
the council seeks value for money in the execution of all its
duties, it orders repairs on the basis of priority and structural
condition, not on appearance.
