Although 16 to 19-year-olds represent only about 10 per cent of all drivers they are involved in 20 to 30 per cent of all crashes. In fact, a staggering 75 per cent of all accidental deaths in this age group occur on the roads.

Improve your driving skills

  • The Think Road Safety website (www.dft.gov.uk/think) features a wide range of useful information for drivers, including information on drink-driving and drug-driving.
  • Pass Plus Scheme (www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/NewlyQualifiedDrivers/DG_4022426) provides information on further training for new drivers after they have passed their driving tests.
  • Helping L Drivers (www.helpingldrivers.com/) helps parents and guardians ensure that their children get the most benefit while learning how to drive cars and ride motorcycles. It includes free resources and advice on preparing for a driving test, staying safe after the test and the law.
  • Driving Standards Agency (DSA) (www.dsa.gov.uk/) provides information for drivers on a variety of topics, including the driving test, highway code, road safety initiatives and useful links.
  • Become an Advanced Driving Instructor (ADI) (www.businesslink.gov.uk/)
  • Current council projects include Licence to Kill? (www.licencetokill.org/), an innovative theatre education project exploring the circumstances and consequences of a road traffic collision.
