Historic Esplanade gets revamp

Rochester Esplanade, one of the most attractive and historic stretches of riverside road in Medway, is receiving strengthening work to the river wall that will result in improvements for both road users and pedestrians.

The Esplanade runs past the birthplace of many famous flying boats made by Short Brothers in their factory where the modern flats now stand.

The wall that supports the southern section of road above the river's edge is being strengthened with new supports to ensure its future safety. At the same time, the footway on the river side of the road will be widened, creating better access for pedestrians.

The work is necessary because the existing riverside retaining wall is becoming weaker and needs reinforcing. This third phase of work continues from the end of the Phase 2 work, completed in May 2010, opposite Mayflower House and continues towards Hathaway Court.

The special silent piling techniques that were successfully used on Phases 1 and 2 are being used to keep the noise levels to a minimum for nearby residents. During the work, the road between Valetta Way and Hathaway Court will be subject to single-lane working, with temporary traffic signals. The footway alongside the river through the site will be closed but the footway on the opposite side of the road will remain open. Delays to traffic are expected to be minimal.

This phase of the refurbishment started in October 2010 and is programmed for completion by March 2011.
