Cleaning
Medway Council’s aim is to provide an effective street cleaning
service throughout Medway, in accordance with the standards laid
down in the Environmental Protection Act 1990, which
require the council to clean more frequently in areas which have
heavy pedestrian and traffic use than in areas which are not under
the same pressures.
In addition to public highways, the council is responsible for
cleaning public alleyways, car parks and other land under its
control.
As part of routine cleaning, a programme for the treatment and
removal of weeds is included, with a treatment schedule between
February and October which covers the main growing season.

Alleys
If the alley is council-owned it will be cleaned on either a
weekly or four-weekly schedule. If it is private it is usually the
responsibility of the properties that back on to it and will not be
cleaned by Medway Council. To request an alley cleaning service or
