DFT Contributions to Severe Weather Damage
Department for Transport (DfT) Contributions to Severe
Weather Damage
In March 2010 the Department of Transport announced that it was
to release £100m additional funding to help repair the damage to
roads following the extreme winter weather. Medway Council's
proportion of the £100m was £220,700 and this was added to the the
highway maintenance budget.
Although £220,700 is not an insignificant amount, it is
relatively small when set against Medway's total budget for highway
maintenance of almost £10m. This budget covers a number of
items including:-
- footway repairs
- street lighting
- white lining and markings
- sign maintenance
- grass cutting and tree maintenance
As a percentage of monies normally spent on patching and
responsive repairs to roads, the £220,700 represents a contribution
around 15-20%.
As a record of how the DfT's special contributions were spent,
the monies were split in half with 50% contributing to the
immediate permanent repairs to potholes and minor defects, with the
remaining 50% being used for larger area repairs to defective
carriageway surfaces.
This second group of repairs was also supplemented by Medway
Council to the sum of £100,000 in order to deal with excessive
damage.
A breakdown of expenditure on patching and minor repairs, as
well as expenditure on larger repairs resulting from severe
weather, can be found below.
