The Kent and Sussex branch of the British Red Cross offers hand, arm and shoulder massage to promote wellbeing for people who need support at home and to relieve stress in emergencies.

The service is delivered in Medway from 9 Stoke Road, Hoo, ME3 9BE and from CVS Medway, Under 1 Roof Building, 5a New Road, Chatham, ME4 6BB.

By providing gentle hand, arm and shoulder massage we help promote a sense of wellbeing and relaxation in people during times of crisis.

The massage, given through clothing, can also assist pain and stress relief.

Anyone can benefit from therapeutic massage: a patient waiting for treatment or recovering from an illness, a carer or someone who is just feeling tense.

Benefits include:

  • relaxation
  • reduction of stress and pain
  • promoting a sense of wellbeing
  • offering a chance to talk to someone trained in listening skills

Our volunteers have good interpersonal skills and an understanding of the differing physical needs of service users.

All of our volunteers also receive regular skills refresher training.

The service is offered in hospitals, hospices, GP surgeries, community meeting places or even at home.

Referrals are usually made by health and other professionals, though people can self-refer.
