Chatham is part of the regeneration project with the aim to transform the town into Medway's 'city centre'.
The Chatham Waterfront and Chatham Placemaking projects aim to complement one another and make a huge improvement to the city centre and river walk in the coming years.
Funding received to revitalise Chatham Town Centre
Medway Council has worked with the business-led Chatham Town Centre Forum to identify their top priorities for improving and enhancing the town centre as part of the Love Chatham Initiative.
The funding will be used for a number of projects including extending the Safer Medway Radio scheme in Chatham town centre, deep cleaning of the High Street, a package of environmental improvements and a dedicated Anti-social behaviour (ASB) Town Centre Warden.
These projects will help to improve the town centre environment and combat anti-social behaviour and crime.
“I was delighted to hear that we had secured funding. This will allow the Chatham Town Centre Forum to continue to support local businesses in the town.”
Gian Chahal, Chairman of the Chatham Centre Forum
Chatham Station regeneration begins
The project includes a complete remodel and makeover of the station and surrounding roads, resurfacing pavements and walkways, new taxi and drop-off bays and new public art.
The works will enhance connectivity between the town’s key transport and commercial centres and improve passenger experience through investments in in public spaces around the station.
“We’re proud to be working with Medway Council and Southeastern on this fantastic project which will improve the station area, boost links with local public transport and help support economic growth in Chatham and the Medway towns.”
John Halsall, managing director of Network Rail South East
Chatham's new fire station opens
The second of two new stations providing fire cover for the Medway towns was opened. The new station provides a modern fire station to serve local people.
“I am very pleased to announce the official opening of Chatham’s fire station. It gives us a base that is fit for purpose for modern day appliances and equipment, as well as being more energy efficient than the former station. I believe this is a very real demonstration of our commitment to provide a good level of emergency response for local people, providing an effective base for our firefighters to help keep local people safe for years to come.”
Kent Fire and Rescue Service Chairman Cllr Nick Chard
Designs for the works are in place
The designs for Chatham's regeneration are being worked on to see the transformation of the area.
"We look forward to working with LDA Design to make Chatham an even more enjoyable place to live, work and visit. This is all part of our ambitious 20-year regeneration plan which will see Chatham emerge as the city centre of Medway.”
