Help us recycle it right this Christmas and New Year

Your kerbside collection day will change this festive season. Please make sure you put your waste and recycling out on the correct day.

There will be no brown bin or bulky collections from Wednesday 23 December until Monday 11 January 2021.

Normal collection days will resume from Monday 4 January 2021.

Do not forget:

  • waste and recycling must be out by 7am. The crews will work until dusk
  • during this period, we will not be able to return for missed bins
  • make sure you follow coronavirus guidelines when disposing of your waste
  • if it snows, services may be cancelled

Check Medway recycles Facebook page or Medway recycles Twitter page for updates.

Christmas top tips

Our collection crews have some top tips for recycling over Christmas and New Year:

  • pop any real Christmas trees next to your brown bin for collection from Monday 11 January 2021
  • do the scrunch test with any wrapping paper – if it scrunches, pop in your blue re-useable bag
  • no glitter or foil cards, and paper in your blue bag
  • place all bottles and cans in your white reusable bag or clear sack
  • donate items that are in good condition to your local charity shop or take to one of our textile banks
  • dispose of your old batteries via supermarkets, shops, libraries, household, waste and recycling centre (HWRC) and electrical outlets.

Food waste

Caddy liners are the cleanest way to recycle food waste at home. Once they are full, pop them into your brown bin. They are only £2 a roll using our click and collect service.

Book a date to have a clear out

Our household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) are open at

  • Capstone (Chatham)
  • Hoath Way (Gillingham)
  • Cuxton

To keep everyone safe, our online HWRC booking service will continue. If you do not book a trip, you will not be able to enter.

Do not forget to bring gloves and keep your distance once on site.

You can book up to two slots a month.

Collection crews

Throughout this year, our collection crews have gone above and beyond to help keep up with even more household waste and recycling.

Please help them this festive period by making sure your waste and recycling is out at 7am. Give them a wave when you are out and about too.

Fly tipping this festive season

If you think rubbish has been dumped illegally in a public area, report it.

Please tell us:

  • where the fly-tipping is happening or has happened
  • what the rubbish is and the amount of it

Also tell us if you know a description of the person fly tipping or any details about the vehicles involved. This helps us to trace and prosecute any offenders.

We may also set up special surveillance in areas which are regularly fly-tipped

To report, complete a report fly tipping online form.
