Check if you need permission
Before you apply for planning permission to make changes to your home, it is important to check if you need permission. If you complete works without planning permission you may have to remove your alterations and may even be reported for breaching planning control.
Article 4 Directions
Some developments will have Article 4 Directions attached which means that the projects will need planning permission for works would not normally be needed.
Certain works will count as permitted development and won’t need planning permission.
Permitted development will be more restricted if they’re in:
- a conservation area
- a national park
- an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
- a World Heritage Site

The usual permissions may not be granted for:
- works in a conservation area
- listed buildings
- works affected by additional requirement due to an Article 4 Direction
- dropped kerbs
- larger home extensions
- works to a tree under a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)
