These are model letters and forms for schools to send to parents, for the collection of pupils’ ethnic background and first language:

Please note that schools are being asked to make changes to the way they categorise Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children. When requesting information from parents, schools will be expected to split the current "Gypsy or Roma" and "Traveller of Irish Heritage" categories into three separate categories (Gypsy, Roma and Traveller categories) from August 2009 or as soon as possible after that date.

This will not change the way schools or local authorities hold or report their data as the numbers will still be aggregated into the existing two categories of 'Gypsy or Roma' and 'Traveller of Irish heritage'. The change aims to help ensure schools make it much easier for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller parents to accurately ascribe the ethnicity of their children.

The above form reflects the above but please note that the ethnicity code for both Gypsy and Roma is the same such as WROM.
