Who can adopt

To be considered to adopt a child you must:

  • be over 21
  • have a spare room
  • be able to give a child love, time and commitment
  • live in Medway, or live within a reasonable distance such as up to an hour and a half drive
  • be a legal resident in the UK, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man and have been for at least 12 months
  • have had a 6 month gap since any infertility treatment
  • have given up smoking for at least 6 months before starting the process

You can be considered to adopt if you are:

  • married, single or in a relationship
  • have children already or if you are a first time parent
  • any gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion or culture
  • disabled or of any age

You will not be able to adopt if you or someone you live with has a criminal record, or a caution for offences against children or sexual offences.
