Contact between adopters and birth relatives

Most adoptions are now arranged so that a link is maintained between the adoptive family and the birth family as the child is growing up. This is usually in the form of an annual or six monthly exchange of letters between the two sets of parents, made through the local authority adoption team to protect the adopters' confidentiality.

When it is in the child's best interests this contact can be face-to-face. Although this arrangement is rare, and when this is the plan the contact is supervised by the Adoption Team.
