Strood Town Centre Project

Commercial Road car park before and after

 The project aims to improve:

  • the reliability of journey times through the town
  • pedestrian facilities
  • the look and feel of the town to encourage more people to visit

We are also aiming to boost economic growth, provide new jobs in the town and create a place that people are proud to live, work and visit.

The improvements are to take place across the town centre in phases, with completion anticipated to be in early 2019.

Phase 1: Commercial Road Car Park and Tolgate Lane

The first phase of the project to transform the existing car park at Commercial Road is substantially complete.

The key features of the Commercial Road car park include:

  • the resurfacing of the car park and Tolgate Lane with high quality materials
  • a pedestrian route through the car park that has reinforced and improved the link from the high street to the retail park
  • new seating and planting and improved lighting (improved lighting is yet to come)

When the market returns to Commercial Road car park it will be able to take full advantage of the new facilities and improved space.

Phase 2: Gun Lane

Two new pedestrian islands with dropped kerbs and tactile paving have been constructed, one near Byrant Road, and one outside the Salvation Army Centre.

Further works in Gun Lane, located at its junction with High Street and North Street will be carried out at a later date with other phases of the scheme.

Phase 3: Station Road junction with Commercial Road

Improvements to the central island on High Street will start on Friday 29 June and will last approximately 3 and a half weeks.

The key improvements will include:

  • a larger, more accessible island for pedestrians
  • the planting of trees and high quality paving materials to enhance the area
  • installation of extra lighting effects to create a gateway feature to tie in with future phases
