Medway City Estate
We are taking steps to ease congestion on the Medway City Estate.
The work, part funded by Government's Local Growth Fund through the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, will improve journey times on and around the estate and future-proof the road network for years to come.
So far improvements include:
- three exit lane extensions at Anthony’s Way onto the A289 to create highway capacity for traffic exiting the estate
- new traffic signals on the eastbound entrance to Medway Tunnel – these signals will be used in the evening peak period to create gaps in the flow of traffic to allow easier exit from the estate
- adjusting traffic signals on Maritime Way so they operate with the new signals
- installing new CCTV cameras on Anthony’s Way linked to an internet viewing portal for the public to view traffic on the estate and plan their journeys
The next phases of the project will focus on improving access to the Medway City Estate for sustainable modes of travel including cycle and pedestrian access. We are also considering the option of a river taxi connecting Chatham town centre to the estate.
This phase of the works will be complete by March 2020, in accordance with the agreed funding period.
A dedicated exit slip lane from Anthony’s Way on to the A289 is also being explored and we are reviewing further options to help ease congestion. We have talked with businesses based on the estate and their opinions will help identify which improvements should be made.
To help you plan your journey you can view the live camera feeds below to check congestion in the area.
