SEND travel assistance
We offer a range of travel assistance options for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) between ages 5 and 16. Applications for children under 5 can be considered on a case-by-case basis.
If your child is eligible, we'll consider how travel assistance could be provided in the most appropriate way.
To promote more independent, sustainable travel to school, we encourage walking and using public transport wherever possible.

Types of travel assistance
We’ll consider a range of travel assistance options based on your child’s needs. This can include options such as:
- bus passes
- rail passes
- fuel allowances
- SEND transport.

Bus passes issued by SEND Transport can be used before 9am. We can consider providing a pass for an accompanying adult where child’s independent travel skills are still being developed.
If we decide a place should be offered on SEND transport, this will usually be in a vehicle shared with other children and young people.
We can make specialised transport arrangements to meet a child's specific needs as required. We’ll contact you if we need further information or evidence about how they need to be supported.
