The government announced in the Budget 2021 that Restart Grants would be available from April 2021. The scheme only applied to businesses in the rating list that were trading on 1 April 2021.

Following clarification from the government, we’ve been making the required pre-payment checks and issuing payments to businesses. As of 17 May 2021, we have paid over £8 million to more than 1,100 businesses.

Eligibility criteria

Your business may have been eligible if it is:

  • based in England
  • rate-paying
  • in the non-essential retail, hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care or gym sectors
  • trading on 1 April 2021.

Read more eligibility criteria on GOV.UK.

If your business is not eligible for this grant, you can apply for an Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG).

Grant payments

We will release payments as soon as we have completed the required pre-payment checks.

Non-essential retail businesses

One-off grants of up to £6,000 will be paid to non-essential retail business premises, to help them re-open safely.

Grant amounts are based on the rateable value of your business address:

Rateable value of business address on 1 April 2021 One-off grant payment
£15,000 or under £2,667
£15,001 to £50,999 £4,000
£51,000 or over £6,000

Hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym businesses

One-off grants of up to £18,000 will be allocated to hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym business premises, which may open later under plans set out in the government roadmap and will be more impacted by restrictions when they do re-open.

The scheme supports businesses that are predominantly reliant on delivering in-person services for the public in these sectors.

Grant amounts are based on the rateable value of your business address:

Rateable value of business address on 1 April 2021 One-off grant payment
£15,000 or under £8,000
£15,000 to £51,000 £12,000
£51,000 or over £18,000
