Free activities for children, young people and families sponsored by Child-friendly Medway

Our team of fitness instructors are taking to the road this summer for some free pop-up community fitness sessions for all ages with Child-friendly Medway.

Activities include:

  • aqua aerobics
  • yoga
  • bootcamp
  • boxercise
  • circuits.

All sessions are free to come along to except for aqua aerobics at the Strand.

For this session you must book a session at the Strand in advance.

Free weekly sessions of informal pop-up sport and activities including football, rounders and tennis.

Sessions are suitable for all abilities and ages and take place in Medway’s greenspaces.

Parksport is sponsored by Child-friendly Medway and sessions run weekly from Saturday 11 June throughout the summer months.

You do not need to book beforehand, just turn up on the day.

The UK’s only riverside saltwater lido will open:

  • daily from Monday 25 July to Thursday 1 September.

We’ve given the pool a makeover, including a repaint of our iconic elephant slide in Jubilee colours to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Use the break from school to develop your child’s water confidence and teach them a vital life skill with our crash course swimming lessons.

Suitable for beginners and available at:

  • Medway Park
  • Hoo Sports Centre
  • Strood Sports Centre.

Aquatic crash courses such as Rookie Lifeguard and Mermaids are suitable for those swimmers who already have basic swimming skills and are confident in deep water.

Weekly course cost is £37.25.

The race is suitable for runners of all abilities, from experienced athletes to those new to running.

The Medway 10k will be helping to raise money for Wisdom Hospice, and runners are encouraged to raise money to help the Hospice through sponsorship.

The race is managed through Nice Work and is chip timed.

Medals will be awarded to all finishers.

Prizes will also be awarded to:

  • leading runners
  • age category winners
  • first male and female UKA affiliated team.

The event is intended to be a family event and, in addition to the main 10k race, there are children’s races around the athletics track.

Whether you are new to running or a seasoned runner, we have some organised runs taking place in parks across Medway this year.

The 4 races will finish at Medway Park’s elite-standard athletics track in October.

Don’t worry, we’ve teamed up with Medway Libraries so young people aged 11 to 18 years can ️borrow a ball️ for free from:

  • Gillingham
  • Lordswood
  • Walderslade Hook Meadow Library.

Play with it, and then bring it back.

To borrow a ball, all you need is a free Medway Libraries account.

Each Football Library has a good selection of️ football related books available to borrow and details of weekly football sessions available for 11 to 18 year olds to take part in.

Medway Sport, Medway Libraries, Medway Youth Service and StreetGames are collaborating with Alive and Kicking and Sport England to help establish these 3 Football Libraries across communities in Medway.

If you are looking for an enjoyable way to improve your tennis skills, make friends and quench your competitive thirst, then you can join our Local Tennis Leagues this summer.

LTA Local Tennis Leagues offer friendly local singles competitions for players aged 18 and over around the country, with matches on thousands of park and public courts.

This summer we will be hosting inflatable pool parties at both Strood and Hoo Sports Centres.

This year the Medway Mile was held at Gillingham and celebrated both the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
