lamp postWhat we want to achieve

To better understand and manage our carbon impact, and to influence others to do the same.

We will ensure the climate emergency and our net zero carbon ambitions are at the forefront of decision making and are embedded in our key strategies and plans such as the Council Plan, the emerging Local Plan, and the forthcoming Medway 2037. We will continue to build on existing relationships and create new ones to share best practice and support each other. We will engage with young people and give them the opportunity to lead in climate action.

How we will do this

We have set out a range of actions for how Medway can respond to the climate emergency. These range from actions that the council will take to lead by example, to those that will support the community to take action.

Some of the key actions are highlighted below.

Ensure that climate change is embedded into the refreshed Council Plan and all other relevant council plans and strategies.

To achieve this, we will:

  • include climate change as a council value in the refreshed Council Plan
  • create an obligation for reporting on the climate impact of decisions made in council decision reports
  • map this action plan against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
  • ensure climate change is embedded within the Cultural Strategy and City of Culture Bid, and the Child Friendly City vision and action plan.

Review how we make purchases as a council and see how we can influence those we buy from to disclose and reduce their emissions.

To achieve this, we will:

  • review relevant waste disposal contracts as they are retendered
  • review the option of giving greater consideration to contracts that favour emission reductions
  • introduce a social value policy, which receives funds from organisations and invests it to deliver community benefits.

Identify training needs for staff and councillors to ensure that everyone can deliver on climate action.

Continue to support the reduction of single use plastic within our communities.

Explore actions and initiatives we can join to ensure that all our cultural events are supporting our environment.

Provide work placement and internship opportunities to support the development and delivery of the climate change action plan.

Address sustainability issues associated with food production, waste, and procurement within the newly-formed Medway Food Partnership.

To read all the actions in our plan:

We have:

  • included a section in our council decision making reports to remind council officers that they must consider the climate impact
  • supported the placement of interns in the Climate Response Team from the University of Kent
  • tasked our climate response intern with mapping the Sustainable Development Goals against our Climate Change Action Plan.
