Where we want to be by 2033
Young people’s aspirations and Medway’s reputation as a sporting destination are raised through the staging of high-profile sporting events.
Medway welcomes high-profile national and international events and performers, with young people given the opportunity to try new sports and experience elite level competition on their doorstep.
The achievements of Medway’s elite athletes and leading clubs and teams are recognised and celebrated, talented young athletes are supported on their performance pathway and community clubs are showcased at high-profile mass participation events.
How we'll make this happen
We will:
- promote Medway to national governing bodies and event organisers to enhance Medway Park's reputation as a venue for national and international competition and training
- involve Medway’s young people in major events and associated sports development activities
- ensure the benefits of staging national and international sporting events maximise the economic benefits to the wider visitor economy
- celebrate the success of individuals, teams and clubs within Medway
- support Medway’s talented and elite athletes
- ensure the positive impacts of Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World Cups and European tournaments are maximised in local benefits to Medway
- showcase Medway’s sporting stars past and present to inspire the next generation of athletes.
An annual action plan will provide a detailed roadmap, with measurable annual outcomes and outputs for specific projects and programmes, all contributing to the long-term vision.
Case study: Medway Sports Awards
From clubs, teams and individuals to coaches, volunteers and schools, the Medway Sports Awards shine a light on the achievements of Medway’s finest sportspeople and the dedication of the individuals who make sport happen in Medway.
The awards continue to grow in status and profile and will remain our showpiece celebration of community and elite sport, giving local sporting heroes the chance to share their success and rub shoulders with Olympic champions.
