The Marmot Place Partnership is a growing group of local leaders working together to act on the 8 Marmot Principles to improve health and change lives in Medway for the better.
In Medway there's a 10 year gap in life expectancy between residents who live just 4 miles apart. The average life expectancy for men living in Cuxton is 83.5 years. However, in Chatham, it's 10 years shorter at 73.4 years.
Life expectancy is lower in people living in areas of higher deprivation and they spend more of their lives in ill health.
Professor Sir Michael Marmot said:
Marmot places have the mission to improve health and change lives for the better. Health inequalities are not inevitable, and it's possible to close the gap but it take a collective effort for this to happen."
About the partnership aims
By 2035, the partnership aims to:
- reduce the gap in life expectancy between Medway and England by half
- reduce the gap in life expectancy between the best and worst off areas in Medway by half
- reduce the gap in healthy life expectancy between Medway and England by half.
The partnership will do this by:
- creating strong and innovative partnerships across sectors to improve co-ordination between teams and organisations
- involving people in designing and delivering services, not just asking for their opinions
- building on existing good work taking place in communities, ensuring it's easy for people to find and access help
- focusing on actions that will make a lasting difference over time, not short term fixes
- using data and evidence to guide decisions and measure progress.
