The Marmot Place Partnership brings together local leaders who want to reduce health inequalities by acting on the causes of ill-health, the conditions people are born, grow, live work and age. These building blocks of health include:

  • housing
  • employment
  • income
  • education.

Marmot Places look to improve the health of their communities following the 8 principles. The 8 principles are grounded in over 4 decades of research from Professor Sir Michael Marmot.

The 8 principles are:

  • give every child the best start in life
  • enable all children, young people and adults to maximise their capabilities and have control over their lives
  • create fair employment and good work for all
  • ensure a healthy standard of living for all
  • create and develop healthy and sustainable places and communities
  • strengthen the role and impact of ill health prevention
  • tackle racism, discrimination and its outcomes
  • pursue environmental sustainability and health equity together.
