We are encouraging all residents to get their flu vaccine this winter.

This year, residents aged 50 and above are eligible to get a free flu jab from a local GP or pharmacy. Pregnant women, frontline staff and carers, children aged two to 16 years old and people with specific health conditions that put them at greater risk if they catch flu, are also able to get the jab for free.

Influenza (flu) is a seasonal respiratory disease. It is generally more common during the winter months and can be extremely unpleasant and cause severe illness and can also be fatal in some cases.  The symptoms of  flu are normally sneezing, coughing, a runny nose and sore throat. Our flu vaccines are safe and effective and getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and others.

Flu vaccinations are available at GP practices and selected pharmacies. The appointment can take less than 10 minutes and once vaccinated people will have a high degree of protection from this dangerous virus.

Prevention is better than the cure. To avoid catching flu and help stop the virus spreading, people should wash their hands often with warm water and soap. Cough and sneeze into a tissue to stop the virus (and other germs) spreading. Dispose of the tissue as quickly as possible.

Medway Council is encouraging residents to check in with older neighbours, relatives and friends over winter. Flu can affect all, but it can make certain people, particularly older people, very unwell. Support our vulnerable residents by keeping in touch. Check if they are feeling under the weather and make sure they have enough supplies of food and medicines.

Protect yourself, protect Medway and protect the NHS

Cllr David Brake, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Adult Services, covering Public Health, said: “I would encourage all residents, especially those who are eligible for a free jab, to get their flu vaccine as soon as possible at your GP or local pharmacist. Getting the vaccination early is the best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family this winter. I want to remind residents to look out for older people, as well as friends and family who may need extra support during the winter. The flu vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, I have had my vaccine and I encourage everyone to get theirs. Catching flu can extremely unpleasant and possibly fatal for some. I encourage all residents to stay warm and well this winter, protect yourself, protect Medway and protect the NHS by getting your jab.”

If you have a high temperature, a new, continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, it could be COVID-19. If you think you have coronavirus, take a symptom free test as soon as possible, or self-isolate if you are waiting on a PCR result.

It’s important to look after yourself during winter as cold weather can be bad for your health. Prepare for winter and keep warm and healthy by making sure you heat your home to at least 18 degrees, wear an extra layer of clothing and get your heating system checked by a qualified professional.
