Our Trading Standards team is warning businesses which sell e-cigarettes to check they are not carrying illegal stock following the discovery of potentially unsafe products in shops in Gillingham.

Since last week, Trading Standards officers have seized more than 150 disposable e-cigarettes which do not meet legal requirements.

Some of these products had tank sizes up to three times the legal limit of 2ml as well as incorrect labelling, with devices lacking information on nicotine content, sufficient health warnings or the details of a UK-based manufacturer or importer who can be contacted in the event of a safety issue.

Most of the products seized had been designed to be sold in the USA, which have different laws governing the sale of e-cigarettes and e-liquids.

Our Trading Standards team have been told by local shop owners that retailers are being approached by mobile sellers who are selling the e-cigarettes from vans.

Check products meet government requirements

Cllr Jane Chitty, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning, Economic Growth and Regulation, covering Trading Standards, said: “The health and wellbeing of all our residents is our top priority and I would implore retailers to remain vigilant and check that the e-cigarettes and e-liquids that they may have on sale meet government requirements. Businesses are advised to only buy products from reputable suppliers and if they are unsure, they are encouraged to contact our Trading Standards team for advice by emailing consumer.protection@medway.gov.uk. If residents have any concerns about the safety of any e-cigarettes or e-liquids they find on sale I would encourage them to report this to our Trading Standards team by calling 0808 223 1133. I would like to thank our dedicated Trading Standards officers for their hard work protecting residents.”

Residents, and businesses, can contact Medway’s Trading Standards team by emailing consumer.protection@medway.gov.uk or phoning the consumer advice helpline on 0808 223 1133.
