Young people across Medway are invited to take part in a wide range of family-friendly sporting activities this summer.

Throughout the summer, Child-Friendly Medway and Sport England are supporting Medway Sport to deliver a fun-filled Jubilee Summer of Sport for children, young people and families.

A range of activities are on offer to encourage young people to become more active, including drop-in football, water sports, tennis, yoga, bootcamp and more in local parks and sports centres across Medway.

The activities began on Monday, 6 June and will continue throughout the summer, until Wednesday, 31 August.

Communities can also come together and have a fun and active summer with spectacular events including the Medway Jubilee Mile and The Big Splash 2022.

Residents of all ages will have waves of fun at The Big Splash on Saturday, 25 June. The Big Splash, which will take place at The Strand in Gillingham, will feature water safety lessons and lifeguard demonstrations alongside fun activities, including aqua aerobics, an inflatable pool party and water-zorbing. All activities are included in the entrance ticket, but booking is essential.

The Big Splash is taking place during the Royal Lifesaving Society's (RLSS) Drowning Prevention Week, from Saturday, 18 to Saturday, 25 June. During the week, people having swimming lessons at Medway’s sport centres will be taught water safety skills and CPR, DeFib and self-rescue videos will be available on Medway Sport’s fitness channel.

New and different sports and activities

Cllr Howard Doe, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “Medway has fantastic sports facilities, clubs and activities for residents of all ages to enjoy. Our wide range of summer activities, including the popular Medway Mile, are great ways to bring communities together and enjoy what Medway has to offer. I’m pleased that our summer of sport programme will provide opportunities for children and young people to get involved with new and different sports and activities at our leisure centres across Medway. I look forward to seeing residents and families having a fun and active summer.”

Medway’s summer of sport supports our aspiration to become even more child-friendly as well as the innovative Medway Can public health campaign which will see Medway travel the distance around the world – 24,902 miles. The campaign is encouraging everyone who lives, works or studies in Medway to become more active and move a mile in their own way. The summer of sport, Medway’s fantastic sport facilities and family-friendly sport sessions will set Medway well on its way to achieving its target.
