Plans for a brand new family-friendly sports centre in Rainham have been given the green light.

Last night (Wednesday, 29 June) our Planning Committee approved plans for a new centre on the former Splashes site.

The state-of-the-art centre will include two swimming pools – a children’s fun pool with flume, wave ball pool and beach area, as well as a training pool for lane swimming and lessons. There will also be a fitness gym and room for exercise classes and children’s parties.

The new facility will have a modern, family-friendly look and feel, including family and accessible changing rooms. The new centre supports Medway’s ambition to provide more child-friendly facilities and provide further opportunities for the area’s young people.

The new sports centre will provide a full experience for customers – visit the gym, join-in a class, take a dip in the pool and afterwards relax in the café overlooking the pool areas.

The designs also include electric charging parking spaces, as part of Medway’s Climate Change and carbon neutral aims and ambitions.

Add to existing sporting facilities

Cllr Howard Doe, Deputy Leader of Medway Council and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “I am delighted that we have received planning permission for a new family-friendly sports centre in Medway. The centre will complement our fantastic existing sporting offer including Medway Park in Gillingham - a centre of sporting excellence, Strood Sports Centre with its 3G soccer centre, Hoo Sports Centre which boasts a wide-range of fitness classes and The Strand – home to the UK’s only riverside salt-water lido. The centre also supports our aspiration for Medway to become a child-friendly city, giving more opportunities to children and young people.”

Flumes at new sports centre

At our Cabinet meeting earlier this month, councillors agreed to recommend that Full Council approve an addition of £12.850million to the Splashes Redevelopment Scheme in the council’s Capital Programme, to enable the development of a new sports centre. Full Council is expected to discuss the funding at its meeting next month.
