Couples are invited to Rochester Corn Exchange this weekend to start turning their dreams of the perfect wedding into reality with the historic venue dressed up to the nines for the Kent Wedding Fair.
This free event, organised by White Sky Events, will be open from 10.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday, 26 March offering a showcase not only for Medway’s unique wedding venues but for wedding planners, caterers, specialists and suppliers.
Couples attending will receive a complimentary goody bag and wedding magazine plus on the day special offers and discounts. Pre-register online. For those not able to attend, the Kent Wedding Fair will return to the venue on Sunday, 14 May and Sunday, 17 September.
With the backdrop of the finest Norman Keep in the country, the grandeur of the second oldest cathedral in England, and a packed programme of festivals, Rochester is full of history with plenty to see and do – and the perfect backdrop for wedding inspiration too.
Among the venues being showcased on Sunday will be Upnor Castle, the 16th Century fortress, reopening in April for the new season, a majestic choice for couples in search of a place to be king and queen for a day.
Here weddings take place in a glorious fairytale setting overlooking the river Medway. Ceremonies in the former munitions store are often followed by celebrations at The Rochester Corn Exchange beneath magnificent high ceilings and chandeliers – the perfect, romantic spot for a first dance together.
Built in 1706 by the splendidly named Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovel, Rochester Corn Exchange has a capacity of up to 300 people, bespoke catering options and an Instagram friendly luxury décor. It can be transformed seamlessly from wedding venue to banqueting space and dancefloor.
Built in 1590, Eastgate House is a Grade I listed Elizabethan townhouse nestled in the heart of historic Rochester. England’s greatest author, Charles Dickens mentioned it in two of his most famous works, Pickwick Papers and his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and is the most perfect setting for more intimate celebrations.
Located in the heart of Rochester, The Guildhall is bursting with character and charm, creating a truly captivating setting for weddings. Built in 1687, it has been a town hall, an entertainment venue, court and council chamber. Now a museum, it displays more than 250,000 years of Medway’s history.
Sense of grandeur
Dee O’Rourke, Medway Council’s Assistant Director of Culture and Community, said: “We’re delighted that Rochester Corn Exchange is hosting the Kent Wedding fair this weekend. The building is a wedding and events venue in its own right with a real sense of grandeur thanks to its fine façade, grand staircase, high ceilings and chandeliers.
“We’re fortunate in Medway to have such a unique collection of historic buildings available for weddings including our own Upnor Castle, Eastgate House and the Guildhall, each with their own charm and fascinating history.
“Many people might not realise these architectural jewels of Medway are available for hire, and we want people to know that if they want to get married in a castle or dance the night away beneath dazzling chandeliers, it’s all here on their doorstep.”
