Medway Council will discuss a proposal to redevelop a shopping centre in Gillingham town centre later this month.

The Britton Farm Shopping Centre has been vacant for more than a year and the council is keen to bring it back into use.

At Medway Council’s Full Council meeting on Thursday, 19 July, councillors will discuss a proposal to allocate £850,000 to remodel the building to enable it to be let as office accommodation, with the additional potential for residential development at one end of the current site.

'This will be an excellent option for the site'

Cllr Adrian Gulvin, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “The shopping centre has been vacant for a long time and has become an eyesore for the residents and businesses in the area. We know that there is demand for much needed office accommodation locally and we believe this will be an excellent option for the site. This proposal, if approved by Full Council, will be great for the local community and benefit businesses in the area. We are committed to revitalising Gillingham town centre and ensuring the vibrancy of the High Street.”
