A better Medway

Medway schools are invited to take part in an exciting and interactive event as part of Children’s Mental Health Week.

The national campaign, run by Place2Be, runs from Monday, 9 February to Sunday, 15 February. This year’s theme is ‘This is my Place!’, which highlights the importance of belonging – as part of a family, school, peer group or community – and the impact that has with helping children feel secure and supported.

To support Medway’s children and young people, we are holding a free event for schools at Lordswood Leisure Centre on Thursday, 12 February. Hosted by Chatham Football Club’s Henry Molyneux, the event will run from 9.45am to 12noon for secondary schools and from 12.15pm to 2.30pm for primary schools.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of mental health, reduce stigma, and help young people understand the support that is on offer in Medway. As well as fun activities like NERF games and a silent disco, there will also be interactive workshops and marketplace stalls from some of the council’s key mental health and emotional wellbeing providers.

In the build-up to the event, schools have been asked to create a piece of art which represents how children and young people feel a sense of belonging in Medway. The aim is to help promote wellbeing, imagination and collaboration whilst giving young people a way to start the conversation around mental health and wellbeing.

Learn about the support that is out there

Cllr Teresa Murray, Deputy Leader of Medway Council and Portfolio Holder for Public Health, said: “It is never too early to start the conversation around mental health and wellbeing. This event will give our children and young people the chance learn about the support that is out there for them, and the skills they can develop, in a fun, safe and encouraging environment. I would like to thank all of our partners, and our host Henry, for joining us to help support our children.”

Equipped with the skills to get through life

Cllr Adam Price, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “Making sure our children and young people are equipped with the skills to get them through life is so important. I hope as many of you as possible are able to join us for what is set to be a fantastic day.”

Schools can sign-up to attend the event now ahead of the deadline on Monday, 19 January. Once signed-up, schools will need to complete an additional information form by Friday, 23 January to fully secure their place.

Place2Be also has a number of free resources available for scools and families - including art activities, assembly guides and school packs - as part of Children's Mental Health Week
