Following feedback from the appointed Planning Inspectors, who are examining Medway’s Local Plan, we are set to start further consultation on some of the supporting Local Plan documents.

Consultation will start on Monday, 8 June and will close at 11.59pm on Monday, 6 July.

The plan outlines how Medway will grow over the next 15 years, including housing, businesses, transport and much more, along with the necessary supporting infrastructure.

Two Planning Inspectors were appointed earlier this year, to carry out an independent examination on the plan and consider any changes that should be made. The Planning Inspectors have asked the council to consult on some of the supporting evidence documents.

We are providing residents and other stakeholders with the opportunity to comment on 35 evidence-base documents that support the draft Medway Local Plan 2041. This includes four new documents which are being published this month:

  • Review of updated strategic flood risk data and implications for the Regulation 19 Sustainability Appraisal.
  • Playing Pitch Strategy.
  • Built Facilities Strategy.
  • Facilities Planning Model.

The majority of documents in this consultation were available at the Regulation 19 stage during the summer of 2025, but they were subsequently updated based on the latest information that was available before the Local Plan was submitted for examination.

To take part, please submit comments on any of the documents via our consultation portal which can be accessed on Medway.gov.uk/LocalPlanExamination.

You can also submit representations by email: Planning.Policy@Medway.gov.uk or by post: Medway Council, Planning Service, Gun Wharf, Dock Road, Chatham, ME4 4TR - stating the Examination Document Reference, e.g. 'A4.1'.

Following the end of the consultation, we will collate and review all responses received. The responses will be shared with the Planning Inspectors and published as part of the examination record.

Call for sites: for future sites available for Gypsy and Traveller, and Travelling Showpeople

Following feedback from the appointed independent inspectors, we are also looking at options to increase the supply of suitable sites for Gypsy and Traveller, and Travelling Showpeople. We have agreed with the inspectors that it will undertake a further call for sites for this use.

This call for sites exercise is an opportunity for anyone to suggest land that could be used for development of Gypsy and Traveller, and Travelling Showpeople accommodation.

Any sites that are submitted will be assessed by our Planning Team for their suitability. Appropriate sites may be proposed as additional development allocations in the Medway Local Plan for further consideration during the examination.

The call for sites period launches on Monday, 8 June and closes at 11:59pm on Monday, 20 July.

Help shape the future of Medway

Cllr Simon Curry, Portfolio Holder covering Planning, said: “As we move through the examination process of the Local Plan, this is your chance to continue to help shape the future of Medway and its growth up to 2041. Getting the Local Plan right is one of the most important things we as a council have to do, and I would encourage everyone to share their views as part of this latest consultation and call for sites.”
