Residents are being invited to have their say on plans to improve everyday journeys in Medway.

The consultation launches today (Monday, 29 June) and will close on Friday, 31 July.

Whether travelling to school, heading to the shops or visiting friends and family – the proposals aim to make day-to-day journeys by foot or bicycle safer, easier and more enjoyable.

In total, six new walking and cycling routes across Gillingham and Chatham are being consulted on. These were identified as priority routes from Medway’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which was adopted in March 2025.

The LCWIP sets out the long-term plan for walking and cycling improvements in Medway.

The routes being consulted on are:

  • Cycle Route 5 – Gillingham – Barnsole Road, Gillingham Road, Church Street and Ingram Road.
  • Cycle Route 6 – Gillingham – Sturdee Avenue and Woodlands Road.
  • Walking Route 5A – Gillingham – Canterbury Street.
  • Walking Route 5B – Gillingham – Richmond Road and Roseberry Road.
  • Walking Route 8A – Chatham – Maidstone Road and Westmount Avenue.
  • Walking Route 8B – Chatham – Dock Road, Westcourt Street and New Stairs.

The suggested changes vary by location, but they all aim to make routes simpler, safer and easier to use.

Changes include clearer crossing points, improved routes for walking and cycling, measures to reduce pavement parking, and better accessibility for all residents.

See a detailed breakdown of the proposed changes at each location.

Consultation responses can be submitted directly through our website, or by emailing: LCWIP@Medway.gov.uk
