The results for the latest active travel competition are in, with more schools than ever taking part.
The Walkin’ N Wheelin challenge, which took place in May, was held in support of National Walk to School Week.
St Peter’s Infant School took first place in the primary school category with an exceptional 86.1 per cent of pupils using active travel during the competition, securing them a new scooter pod.
The challenge could not have been much closer, with Twydall Primary School and Nursery narrowly coming second with 85.9 per cent, and Greenvale Primary School not far behind with 84.5 per cent.
In the secondary school category, The Victory Academy placed first with 48.9 per cent, securing them a new bike repair station.
Across all schools, St Mary’s Island Church of England Primary School made the biggest improvement compared to the previous year, with an 18.2 per cent increase in active travel.
In total, almost 20,000 active journeys took place during the week, with all participant schools receiving a certificate for their efforts.
Brilliant way to help set healthy habits
Cllr Alex Paterson, Portfolio Holder for covering Highways, said: “It was fantastic to see so many children and their families choose active travel, and to see one of our first School Streets schools, St Peter's Infants, leading the way in the primary category - demonstrating the long-term positive impact of these award-winning schemes. As a council we are committed to making travel to school safer and it’s brilliant to see so many residents supporting initiatives like these.

Our team run lots of competitions like this throughout the year, and they are a brilliant way to help set healthy habits for our youngest residents – whilst also helping our environment, cutting down on congestion at the school gate and helping to keep children, their families and staff safer on the school run.”
