Amazon will open a new 34,000 square metre sortation centre in Medway in October 2018 that will create more than 200 permanent jobs.
The centre will sort parcels received from Amazon’s fulfilment centres before they are transported to delivery stations where they are collected by drivers for delivery to customers.
Kevin Marsh, General Manager for Amazon Sortation UK Operations, said: “We are delighted to be creating 200 permanent jobs in Medway as we continue to grow our last mile logistics network. The sortation centre will have an important role in supporting the fast and reliable delivery Amazon customers love and trust. We would like to thank everyone in Medway and beyond for their support on this site.”
2018 marks the twentieth anniversary of Amazon creating jobs in the UK and the company is creating 2,500 new jobs in the UK this year alone, taking the total UK workforce to 27,500 by the end of the year.
2018 also represents an important milestone in Medway’s history - it marks 20 years since the founding of Medway and the creation of the unitary authority, Medway Council.
Leader of Medway Council, Cllr Alan Jarrett, said:
“This is fantastic news for Medway. We are delighted Amazon has recognised that Medway is ideally located to help the company grow. Medway already has excellent transport and business links to London and the continent, making it a great place to do business. Medway is already home to more than 14,000 businesses and this move shows great confidence in all we have to offer businesses of all sizes looking to grow from strength to strength.
Amazon will not only provide opportunities for local people, but it will also complement existing businesses in our town centres. We have already invested heavily in our town centres and have seen many new shops and restaurants open across our five towns. We will continue to support businesses of all sizes and invest in areas across Medway.
We are particularly delighted that Amazon has chosen to locate in Medway in 2018, the year when Medway is celebrating its 20th anniversary and Amazon celebrates 20 years of creating jobs in the UK. The new site in Medway will create more than 200 permanent jobs and I hope with Medway’s skilled workforce, local people will be able to fill these roles.”
Chris Broom, Head of Investment at Locate in Kent, said:
“We already know that Medway is a great place to do business, with its excellent transport links and access to a talented workforce. The investment and new jobs that Amazon will bring is a fantastic endorsement for all that Medway has to offer and shows that the region is very much open for business.”
