Medway Council has received a glowing report after its procedures practices and policies for safety at sports grounds was audited.

Following Lord Justice Taylor’s Final Report on the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster in April 1989, the Sports Grounds Safety Authority monitor local authorities’ oversight of spectator safety at international, Premiership and Football League grounds to ensure that an incident like that never happens again.

Medway Council received maximum points in the audit which reviewed a range of topics including safety procedures, business continuity and match day monitoring.

The council works closely with Gillingham Football Club to ensure the safety of fans who visit Priestfield Stadium to watch matches.

'Ensuring football fans stay safe'

Cllr Jane Chitty, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regulation, said: “It is incredibly important that sports grounds are safely managed so that everyone can enjoy themselves at matches. The report is testament to the hard work that both Medway Council and Gillingham Football Club do to ensure that football fans stay safe and to ensure Better Business for All (BBfA). Fans can enjoy a match knowing that this work has been done.”

A Gillingham Football Club spokesperson said: “Supporter safety is of paramount importance to the Football Club and we always ensure our safety management procedures are thoroughly adhered to.

“We appreciate the support that Medway Council offer us and we will continue to work with them to make sure all fans that attend our matches enjoy their experience.”
