The Strand swimming pools in Gillingham will not reopen this summer due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Medway Council has taken the difficult decision not to open the leisure pool or paddling pool this year as it would be difficult to put social distancing measures in place to help keep residents safe and stop the virus from spreading.

Currently all of Medway’s sports centres are closed in line with government advice. The council will continue to follow government advice on the reopening of sports centres when it is safe to do so.

'The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our top priority'

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We understand that this decision will be disappointing for residents and visitors, however the safety and wellbeing of our customers is our top priority. Unfortunately, due to the layout and popularity of the leisure pools it would be difficult to put social distancing guidelines in place. I would like to thank residents for their understanding at this time and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Strand swimming pools next year.”
