At last night’s (16 July) Full Council meeting, councillors agreed to set up a cross party working group to conduct a review of memorials, historic markers and monuments in Medway.

The group will consider what changes, if any, would be appropriate.

We are very proud of our diverse and multi-cultural communities in Medway

Leader of Medway Council, Cllr Alan Jarrett, said: “I am pleased that this important motion was agreed at Full Council. Although we cannot change the past we can consider the present day cultural links to historical figures which may now be considered more controversial in 2020.

“We all have a duty to honour Medway’s heritage and tell our story in a way which is both meaningful and respectful to all of Medway’s residents.

“We are very proud of our diverse and multi-cultural communities which make Medway the special place it is today and it is of paramount importance that we recognise this and celebrate it in all that we do.”

The findings of the cross-party working group will be presented to Cabinet at the earliest practical opportunity.
