We are pleased to announce that the council been awarded nearly £50,000 from Arts Council England for an exciting creative project in Medway’s libraries.

The council has received a £48,990 grant which will be used to celebrate Medway’s diverse history through a series of workshops, events and a week of performances created by young people. As part of the Your Own, Your Very Own Medway Music Hall project, young people will work with Play On Words Theatre Company to produce the performances inspired by Medway’s history using Medway libraries local history collections.

The workshops taking place aim to encourage young people to visit libraries, improve their wellbeing through creative work and to learn new skills. Workshops include illustration, lyrics writing and research and digital literacy. The project also aims to celebrate diverse local heritage and to develop a sense of pride in the area.

The workshops and performances will be held in Medway’s libraries, more information will be available in due course.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “I am pleased that we’ve been awarded funding for this exciting project and I look forward to watching it take shape. Young people are at the heart of the Your Own, Your Very Own project, which supports our Child-Friendly City aspirations. The project also supports Medway’s bid to become a City of Culture that will bring a new and exciting chapter in Medway’s history. I would encourage as many young people as possible to get involved and discover the rich history on their doorstep.”
