A great place to live and work
With a population of around 250,000, Medway is one of the biggest and most significant urban areas in the south-east outside of London, made up of the towns of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham with rural outlying areas. Benefiting from the regeneration of the Thames Gateway, Medway is fast becoming a city of learning, culture, tourism and enterprise. The map further down this page shows where the Medway towns are situated in the north of Kent. Medway is a unitary authority and has 85 Primary schools, 19 Secondary schools and 5 SEN Schools. Medway is rich in historical and leisure attractions, so you will never be short of things to see and do. Rochester Cathedral is the second oldest in England, founded in 604. The present building dates back to 1080. Rochester Castle is one of the tallest keeps in England and among the best preserved examples of Norman architecture. The Castle gardens are host to the Medway summer concerts, past acts include Blondie, Van Morrison, The Sugababes and Jools Holland. Dickens and Sweeps festivals in the summer bring a colourful spectacle of music, dance, drama and street theatre that has rightly earned its place in the south-east tourism calendar as one of the key events of the summer Dickens World - A new multi-million pound themed entertainment attraction based upon the life, times, books and characters of Charles Dickens is now open in Chatham Maritime. For more information visit the dedicated website (www.dickensworld.co.uk) Close by is Dockside designer outlet shopping centre and The Historic Dockyard, one of the world's most important maritime heritage locations and the venue for a variety of top attractions for everyone. Also at the Maritime site is a newly built cinema complex showing all the latest releases. If you're a football fan you can watch League one matches at Priestfields - home to Gillingham FC (www.gillinghamfootballclub.premiumtv.co.uk) Medway is a popular place for activities including a Ski and Snowboard centre; open all year round with the longest toboggan run in the country. And Medway is perfectly placed to access so much more...In half an hour you could be in Europe's largest shopping complex Bluewater (www.bluewater.co.uk) browsing the designer shops, eating in one of the numerous restaurants or catching the latest movie. Medway is situated just 30 miles from central London and there are frequent rail services to Victoria and Charing Cross from all the five main Medway railway stations. In an hour you could be in the centre of London visiting the famous sights The London eye, Tower of London, Houses of Parliament to name but a few. See the latest musicals in a world class theatre or watch Shakespeare in the Globe theatre on the Southbank or in the open air theatre at Regents Park.
The whole of Kent or "The Garden Of England" is on your doorstep. Beautiful countryside, Oast houses, village greens and thatched cottages. Visit historic towns such as Canterbury or Tunbridge Wells or visit beaches on the Kent coast. If you would like to explore Europe, the Channel tunnel is only a one hour drive away or take the ferry at Dover - 45 miles away. Visit France on a cheap afternoon return and stock up on speciality food and wines.
