Overview

Upnor Castle is on the banks of the River Medway.

The castle was originally built on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 to defend her warships at anchor in the reaches of the Medway and Chatham Dockyard.

Visiting Upnor Castle

From Tuesday 19 May 2026, Upnor Castle will be managed by English Heritage.

Guided tours of the castle will take place on the last Sunday of every month at 1pm and 3pm, starting from Sunday 31 May 2026.

You can also go along to their community open morning on Saturday 13 June from 11am to 1pm to meet the English Heritage team.
