You can be given a fine, otherwise known as a fixed penalty notice (FPN), by post or on the spot if you commit an offence in Medway.

If you receive a fine, you'll need to pay this to us or Waste Investigations Support and Enforcement (WISE). This depends on who issues the fine.

Paying a fine:

  • is not an admission of guilt
  • does not result in conviction or criminal record
  • means you'll never be prosecuted for the offence.

Pay a fine to us

When paying a fine, you need to quote your surname and the FPN number (found at the front of your ticket) as the reference.

Pay a fine online to us.

You can also pay us by calling 01634 333 333.

You can pay by post by writing the FPN number on the back of the cheque or postal order. You should make it payable to: Medway Council, Cashiers, Gun Wharf, Dock Road, Chatham, Kent, ME4 4TR.

If you provide a stamped address envelope, we'll send you a receipt. Do not send cash through the post. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted.

Pay a fine to WISE

We work with WISE for street scene enforcement. They're authorised to issue fines for littering and Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) offences.

Pay a fine to WISE

You can also pay your fine by:

  • calling 0330 314 9706
  • making a cash payment at any Payzone Outlet or Post Office.

If you make a cash payment, you'll need to show them the unique barcode on your FPN.

If you're struggling to pay the fine

You cannot pay for a fine in instalments.

If you contact us within the 14-day payment period, we may extend the payment for up to 28 days from the date the ticket was issued. This is only extended under certain circumstances.

If WISE issued the fine, you can contact them for advice:

Dispute a fine in court

You cannot appeal a fine (FPN), so if you think it was incorrect and choose not to pay, you will have to make your case in court.

If the court thinks you committed the offence, they can impose a maximum penalty of £2,500. The fine itself will tell you more about how you can dispute a fine in court.

Wrong address

If you receive a fine at your address and the named person does not live there, you'll need to contact whoever issued the fine:

  • call WISE on 0333 577 2949
  • call us on 01634 333 333.
