A consultation on the proposed Temple Marsh Nature Reserve opens today (Monday, 10 November).

Residents are encouraged to have their say on the initial plans, which would see the Strood site transformed into an open space which support local wildlife and for residents to enjoy.

The consultation will run for four weeks until Monday, 8 December.

Two public events will also be held at Strood Sports Centre for residents to find out more about the plans. The events will be held on Thursday, 27 November from 4pm to 8pm, and on Saturday, 29 November from 10am to 2pm.

The proposals include creating new footpaths, a viewing platform overlooking the marshland, new wayfinding signage, play trails for Medway’s younger residents, a picnic area and more.

As well as proposing to create new habitats, the design also ensures existing ecologically sensitive areas are protected. Wildlife living on the site includes orchids, nightingales, bats, frogs and slow worms.

The £1.2million project is being funded through Section 106 payments, which are made by developers and used to fund community infrastructure projects, and other developer contributions.

Put forward their views

Cllr Simon Curry, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, said: “This is an exciting project which will transform the land at Temple Marsh into a new greenspace that our residents can enjoy, and also help support the local wildlife which includes orchids, nightingales and slow worms. This consultation is an opportunity for our residents to take a look at the initial plans and put forward their views, and I would encourage them to take a look at them today and have their say.”
