We are appealing to residents for information after waste has been fly-tipped on Shawstead Road, Chatham.

The waste was dumped on Thursday, 5 February at 4.50am.

Anyone with information or CCTV or dashcam footage, particularly of large waste carrying vehicles in the area of Shawstead Road, North Dane Way and Princes Avenue between 4am and 5.30am, is encouraged to report this to Medway Council.

You can make a report online, by emailing EnvironmentalEnforcement@Medway.gov.uk or by calling 01634 333333 and leaving your details for the council’s Enforcement Team to call you back.

The waste, weighing 8.9tonnes, was cleared last week, and Shawstead Road is open to motorists.

Zero-tolerance approach

Cllr Alex Paterson, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Community Safety and Enforcement, said: “There is a zero-tolerance approach in Medway for those who fail to follow the rules, and I am grateful to the team working hard to put a stop to those who think it is acceptable to commit such an unsightly and costly offence in Medway. We are asking for your help to identify the suspected offenders and put a stop to them potentially reoffending and ensure they face the consequences of their actions.

“Fly-tipping is a serious crime which unfairly impacts the majority of us that follow the rules, it harms our environment and cleaning it up costs the public purse thousands every year.”

Residents are also reminded of their responsibility to ensure that anyone disposing of waste on their behalf – that cannot be taken away by standard weekly household collections – has the necessary waste carrier licence. Residents not taking reasonable measures to check operators are legitimate waste carriers – that are registered through the Environment Agency – can also be fined.
