Have you checked out the new improved play area at Gillingham Park?
Delivered just in time for some half-term fun, the improvements have been made using funding from developer contributions (Section 106), and completed in mid-May at a cost of £49,000.
Medway Council worked with a play designer and installation contractor Kompan UK, along with the Friends of Gillingham Park, to develop the eye-catching, colourful final design, which includes a nature theme and reflects other features in Gillingham Park.
The new design is also inclusive and supports children with disabilities or learning difficulties, helping children develop physical skills, thinking skills, and social interaction through play.
The existing infant play unit has been replaced with a new multi-play unit that includes more accessible features. These include a staircase that can be used by children with reduced mobility (with help from a parent or carer), a wider slide to improve inclusivity, and different types of bridges to suit a range of abilities - all of which help children build balance and coordination.
Additional equipment includes a see-saw, a spinning bowl, 3D butterfly graphics, and play panels. These new features are designed for all families and encourage children from all backgrounds to play, interact, and enjoy the space together.
Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, said: “I hope everyone’s been enjoying the new improved play area at Gillingham Park this half term. It’s great to see the new colour design, nature theme, and inclusive features, which open up the park to many more people. There’s so much fun to be had at the park for children of different ages and abilities, and I’m sure it will become a favourite destination for many years.”
