We're encouraging all Medway schools to sign up to compete in our active travel competition, the Walkin' N Wheelin' Challenge, in support of National Walk to School Week from Monday 18 May to Friday 22 May 2026.

The campaign aims to inspire schools, families, and young adults to travel to school using active travel over the course of the 5 day event. This is to help create long-term green travel habits.

Once a school has signed up, monitoring progress is simple. Each morning, conduct a simple hands-up survey of how many pupils have actively travelled to school.

Active travel refers to:

  • walking
  • wheeling
  • cycling
  • scootering
  • park and stride (walking the last 10 minutes of the journey).

Prizes

Schools that achieve the highest percentage of active travel will be rewarded.

All participating schools will receive an e-certificate in recognition of their active travel commitment. This can be used as evidence for your Modeshift school travel plan accreditation.

Primary school prize

The winning primary school will receive a mushroom scooter pod.

This provides storage for up to 12 scooters, keeping them organised and accessible. You'll be able to choose your own colour too.

Secondary school prize

The winning secondary school will receive a bike repair station. This comes with a bike pump and a set of essential tools.

This valuable facility will support bike maintenance and encourage continued active travel amongst students.

How to sign up

You can sign up by completing the competition registration form and emailing it to transportinitiatives@medway.gov.uk before 18 May 2026.

Once registration is complete, you'll be sent your results table.
